Mr. Craig has owned James Craig Fine and Decorative Arts and served as a fine arts consultant based in Independence, Virginia since 1985. He worked with the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in the ‘60s, and is a former curator of decorative arts with the North Carolina Office of Archives and History in Raleigh. Mr. Craig specializes in the cultural creations of the Carolinas, and is the author of “The Arts and Crafts in North Carolina 1699-1840,” published in 1965.
Born to John Edward Craig and Una Bee Craig in Chester, South Carolina, Mr. Craig studied with the University of South Carolina and the College Conservatory of Music with the University of Cincinnati, later attending the Julliard School and studying art in Paris, France. After working with the North Carolina Office of Archives and History and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, he became principal of his own arts company, later acquiring full ownership of James Craig Fine and Decorative Arts. From 1969 to 1985, he also served as president of Craig and Tarlton Inc. in Raleigh.
Mr. Craig is a recognized art expert, and served as trustee of the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, North Carolina from 2000 to 2006. He has supported the New York Chamber Opera Theater, the Sparta Museum Project, Chamber Music Raleigh, the North Carolina Executive Mansion, and the Metropolitan Opera of New York City. Mr. Craig was selected for the pages of numerous volumes of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World. He is the life partner of Randy S. Johnson.
