George W. Martin, Writer (Retired), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music of all genres.

Prior to making writing his full-time job, Mr. Martin worked as an affiliate at Emmet, Marvin & Martin from 1955 to 1959. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become a lawyer, but ultimately felt drawn to being a writer. Mr. Martin comes from a long line of prolific writers, including his grandfather Edward S. Martin who wrote poetry books and founded Life Magazine, and his great grandfather Enos T.T. Martin, who wrote for a paper in the mid-19th century. Thus far, the highlight of Mr. Martin’s career has been writing “CCB: The Life and Century of Charles C. Burlingham, New York’s First Citizen.” This book won the prestigious Griswold Prize from the United States Supreme Court Historical Society in 2006.

Mr. Martin attributes his success to his ability to focus. He says writing a book is a very difficult process if you are not able to tune out other factors. It takes an immense level of focus to stick to the work. Mr. Martin prepared for a career as a writer by first earning a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1948. He continued with coursework at the University of Cambridge and Trinity College before earning an LLB at the University of Virginia in 1953. As a writer, Mr. Martin focuses on writing about history and about opera, his two areas of expertise. In 2014, he published “Opera at the Bandstand, Then and Now,” which was preceded by a wide variety of books. He has also written such novels as, “The Red Shirt and The Cross of Savoy: The Story of Italy’s Risorgimento, 1748-1871,” “Causes and Conflicts: The Centennial History of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, 1870-1970” and several editions of “The Opera Companion: A Guide for the Casual Operagoer.”

In lieu of his accomplishments, Mr. Martin has also been featured as an Industry Leader and as a Lifetime Achiever with Marquis Who’s Who. Looking toward the future, he endeavors to continue writing.
