Gene K. Garrison, Writer, Artist and Photographer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the writing and photography arts.
A prolific writer and photographer, Ms. Garrison has excelled in her field for more than 45 years. Self-employed as a freelance writer and photographer since 1972, she previously was a feature articles writer for Carefree Enterprise Magazine from 1973 to 1993, and a contributing author for The Arizona Republic’s Sunday Supplement, Arizona Magazine. Additionally, she was an assistant script supervisor for The New Dick Van Dyke Show. The founder of Desert Artists, Inc., a cooperative gallery in the Cave Creek/Cafree AZ, area, Ms. Garrison and her late husband remained members of the gallery for 16 years.
Passionate about learning, Ms. Garrison sought a formal education, receiving an Associate of Arts from Phoenix College in 1964. She subsequently completed further coursework in art, photography, and writing at Glendale Community College and Arizona State University. Additionally, she received a certificate of graduation from New York Institute of Photography later in her career. Alongside her professional endeavors, she found enjoyment in the theater as a historian, directors assistant, stage manager, and performer of the Desert Foothills Community Theater and the Sedona Arts Center. She is a former tutor for the Sedona Literacy Center.
Well known for her storytelling, Ms. Garrison has published a myriad of non-fiction books throughout career. The acclaimed author of “From Thunder to Breakfast” and “Wedgewood,” she has most recently published such books as “There’s something about Cave Creek (It’s the People),” and “Widow… or Widow-to-Be?” However, she is most renowned for her book, “Artists of Sedona, 1930-1999,” which tells the stories of prominent artists in the Sedona, AZ region throughout the 20th century. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to the art world, she was nominated for the Governor’s Award in 2016.
A respected voice in the arts, Ms. Garrison has maintained affiliation with several professional organizations, including the Sedona Writers Salon, the International Society of Experimental Artists and the Western Writers of America. She is a former member of the Q2 Artists, the Sedona Area Guild of Artists, the Sedona Camera Club and the Professional Writers of Prescott. Ms. Garrison has been listed in several editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women throughout the years.
