Sophia Amm, Artist and Educator at the YMCA, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in multimedia art and education.
Growing up, Mrs. Amm envisioned herself dedicating her life to creating art. In the years since, she has contributed to the field with installations, life sculptures, videos, and painting. Her artistic style is best described as contemporary and abstract, and it has landed in gallery spaces and collections across Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Poland, and the United States. Throughout her career, she has taught art at the YMCA and was a nurse for many years in Canada and the United States. She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Visiting Nurses Association, the General Hospital in Maine, Reddy Memorial Hospital, and the Allied Registry. In addition, she served as a counselor to new immigrants at the Ontario Welcome House. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Civic Art Center in Illinois and been featured across many festivals in Wisconsin.
Mrs. Amm first earned a diploma in nursing from Ontario Hospital in 1953. In 1980, she received a BFA from York University with honors. In addition, she received an MFA from Norwich University in 2000. She has been a member of the Arena Art Group, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Wisconsin Women in the Arts and the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors organization. Mrs. Amm has also won many awards for her work, included Best in Shows, Honorable Mentions, and the First Place Award at Appleton Art Center.
