Joseph Carvalho, Owner and Manager at Watershops Studio, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of music and art.
A talented sculptor and musician as well as a knowledgeable historian, Mr. Carvalho has had a diverse and illustrious career. In addition to owning and managing Watershops Studio since 2009, he has been a historical consultant for Valley History Research Services since 2010 and conductor for the East Sky Orchestra since 2011. He has also been a co-editor for The Republican’s Heritage Books Series since 2015 and guitarist for The Buddy McEarns Band. His prior positions include manager and musician for Eva Cappelli & The Watershops Band, president and executive director of the Springfield Library and Museum Association, director of the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum of Springfield and instructor at Westfield State College in Massachusetts since 1976.
In addition to his main career pursuits, Mr. Carvalho has been the director of the Institute for Massachusetts Studies at Westfield State College, serving on the board of trustees and directors for the institution. His pursuits include membership with the board of directors for the Urban League of Greater Springfield from 1992 to 2003, holding the role of vice president for the Indian Motorcycle Museum of Springfield from 1996 to 2007. Furthermore, he is the founder of the Springfield Business Improvement District, a formal organization of property owners and commercial tenants who are dedicated to promoting business development and improving the Springfield area’s quality of life. Mr. Carvalho values the traditions of history and museums, appreciating the richness they contribute to society. He strives to tell untold stories, dedicating himself to the pursuit of history and art.
Mr. Carvalho has received commendation from the American Association for State and Local History as well as the Excellence in Programming award, Cable TV Endowment from Springfield. He has been awarded the Video History Documentary Award from the New England Historic Association and the Eva Cappelli & the Watershops Band Internet Radio Award. Mr. Carvalho is a member of numerous esteemed organizations, including the National Genealogical Society, the American Association of Museums and the Academy of Certified Archivists. Mr. Carvalho also holds membership with the Association of Professional Genealogists and the New England Museum Association. His creative works are abundant, including, but certainly not limited to, serving as the executive producer of the documentary “The Making of the Dr. Seuss National Memorial” as well as co-producing and directing over 80 music videos. Additionally, Mr. Carvalho has been the associate editor of “Labor in Massachusetts” and the “Historical Journal of Massachusetts.”
Mr. Carvalho attended multiple institutions, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Westfield State University in 1975, a Master of Arts in history from the College of William and Mary in 1977 and a Master in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Rhode Island in 1985. He is a certified archivist and genealogical records searcher, dedicated to unearthing the past and sharing his findings with others. His love of history had been cultivated during his undergraduate career when he had professors inspire him to pursue history, while his family encouraged him to practice music from an early age. An exceptional sculptor, Mr. Carvalho had been awed by the artworks he had seen in museums, deciding he, too, desired to create works influenced by historical events or people. He considers a career highlight to be establishing the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Park and plans on continuing the work he loves. In recognition of his notoriety, Mr. Carvalho has been a recipient of The Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.
