With more than 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Stark is a venerated and prolific film writer, producer and actor who has been leading John Stark Productions in Ojai, California, since 1966. The producer of the award-winning feature film, “Chekhov and Maria,” based on the acclaimed New York off-Broadway production of the same title by Jovanka Bach, Mr. Stark has written and directed more than 40 plays in New York City, London, Los Angeles, and Canada.
“Chekhov and Maria” has won a plethora of honors since its debut, including Best Feature Drama and Best Directorial Debut by the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, Best Feature at the British Film Festival, and an award at the Heart of England International Film Festival. The film is airing nationally on PBS-TV stations and can be viewed on Amazon.com.
Mr. Stark is the author of “The Death of Angelique Vitry” and “Sons of Freedom,” a historical novel about Russian immigrants living in Canada which is being turned into a feature film. However, Mr. Stark is perhaps most renowned for his portrayal of Canadian humorist Stephen Leacock in “An Evening with Stephen Leacock,” which was originally shown on CBC, BBC, BRAVO, and numerous European networks. Mr. Stark toured Europe as the infamous professor and performed at the National Arts Center in Ottawa, Canada, where the show was taped and later released as an RCA album. “An Evening with Stephen Leacock” can also be streamed on Amazon.com.
The proud father of two children and four grandchildren, Mr. Stark holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue writing and producing films and plays.
