Commencing her career as a music researcher with Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles, CA, in 1978, Ms. Henkel went on to serve as a music reviewer for the Los Angeles Times and scriptwriter and producer at KUSC-FM. Soon thereafter, she served as a program annotator and education consultant with the Chamber Music LA Festival, a program annotator for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and a visiting in-school classroom speaker and on-stage host of the Music Outreach Program with the Chamber Music LA Festival Program. Subsequently she served as a liner note writer for Pro Piano Records in New York City. Since 1998, she has been an education consultant for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, having also been a composer and owner of Sign of the Silver Birch Music in Los Angeles since 2004. In addition, she has sat on the advisory board of the music department at Los Angeles City College since 1994.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1965, Ms. Henkel also received a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from California State University, Northridge, in 1976 and 1982, respectively. During her tenure, she has participated in the Dana School New Music Festival and composed original chamber music and song cycles, including her most recent, “Nighthawks,” in 2018.
In order to remain abreast of changes within the industry, Ms. Henkel maintains affiliation with numerous organizations. She is a member of the Recording Academy, the American Federation of Musicians, the National Association of Composers, and several honor societies. As a testament to her success, she received the Commission for Music Award from the State of Alaska in 1994. In addition, she was highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
Residing in her hometown of Los Angeles, Ms. Henkel enjoys traveling, gardening, studying astronomy and hiking the Cornwall coastal path in her spare time. Heavily involved with her publishing company, which consists of herself, a copyist, and a graphic designer, she notes that there is little room for mistakes and the work is labor-intensive. However, she has always been grateful for the opportunity to share her music with others, believing that her hard work has always paid off. Looking toward the future, she intends to continue doing radio interviews for CU-TV News in New York City.
