Tobi Kumar, Photographer and Poet, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of art and writing.
Inspired by the world around her and passionate about affecting positive change, Ms. Kumar has dedicated her life to the arts. She has been a freelance oil painter for Let There Be Dragons in Fairport since 1991, a freelance artist in India in the 1970s, and has worked for Leichtner’s Photograph Studios in Rochester, NY, the American Photograph Corp. in New York City and for Karl Mann Associates. Ms. Kumar holds a certification in photography from the New York Institute of Photography, studied at the Art Students League of New York and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kent State University. She has long enjoyed painting and collecting art and has recently begun working on writing creative non-fiction pieces.
Ms. Kumar’s photography has been exhibited at Open Studios in New York City in 1990 and her poetry has been published by Eiber & Wein Publishing. She is the recipient of the International Who’s Who in Poetry Award which she received through Eiber & Wein Publishing in 2012, has won the Golden Poet Award from the World of Poetry and has won third prize in a National Poetry Contest. Ms. Kumar’s values her professional successes but is most proud of her role in the Civil Rights Movement. She was a Freedom Rider who, with others, was incarcerated for a weekend in Baltimore. Upon release, Ms. Kumar and others left Baltimore on the Freedom Buses and they rode through impoverished areas of Baltimore where people cheered on rooftops and children ran alongside the bus shouting, “We shall overcome.” Ms. Kumar vividly recalls the emotional intensity and solidarity of and considers this the most moving moment of her life. In recognition of her success, Ms. Kumar has been lauded with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has been featured in the 24th Edition of Who’s Who in the East.
