With more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. Mitchell has been music director at St. John’s Presbyterian since 2013. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was director of music at Springdale Presbyterian Church from 1999 to 2013. Earlier in his career, he was a music educator from 1972 to 1999 and a music teacher for Jefferson County Board. Dr. Mitchell continues to perform music and enjoys playing every week for his church.
Dr. Mitchell began his career as a student at Stillman College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1972. He then joined the University of Louisville, completing a Master of Music Education in 1981. He later continued his studies with the University of Kentucky, earning a Doctor of Music in 1998. Dr. Mitchell is a nationally certified teacher of music. Dr. Mitchell was always interested in music. Growing up, he had a toy piano and bang away endlessly at it. Eventually, he started taking piano lessons which spelled out the trajectory of his career.
A respected voice in his field, Dr. Mitchell has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of Musica Toscana, Inc., the Kentuckiana Association of Negro Musicians, the National Association of Negro Musicians, and the Music Teachers National Association. He has also been affiliated with the American Choral Director Association, Hymn Society, the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, the American Guild of Organists, Alpha Kappa Mu, and the Jennie Gebhardt Hedden Music Study Club.
