B. John Burns, Singer, Songwriter and Retired Assistant Federal Defender has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a legal professional and musician.
With nearly 35 years of professional experience, Mr. Burns was an assistant federal defender with the Office of the Federal Defender from 1999 until his retirement. Prior to obtaining this role, he was an assistant public defender with Des Moines Adult Public Defenders from 1994 to 1999, and earlier in his career, he was an assistant appellate defender for the Iowa Appellate Defender Office from 1985 to 1994. Since his retirement, Mr. Burns has pursued his passion for music as a singer and songwriter. He has written songs for more than 45 years, and earlier in his career, he toured the country as a member of Baby Lester and the Buggybumpers.
Mr. Burns first pursued his higher education with the University of Iowa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1982. He continued his studies with the school, earning a JD, with distinction, in 1984. He has been admitted to practice in the state of Iowa, as well as before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
