Ms. O’Connell always felt the gravitational pull toward the art industry. During her time in college, she had several months off, so she worked for a Gulf oil company. Later on, when she lived in New York, she had work and wanted to find new hobbies. She ended up meeting Jack Gates, an artist who brought art to her eyes. This led her to start making paintings and people would tell her they were good.

Ms. O’Connell earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Immaculata College in 1966. From there, she received a Master of Arts in psychology and counseling from Villanova University in 1967. Once she became interested in art, she studied oil painting with Jack Gates in 1974. Later on, she continued in the art field studying retablo art with Santeros Patricio and Shawna Chavez in Chimayo, New Mexico from 2012 to 2020.
