Doc Powell, Artistic Director with the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the performing arts.

Since 1960, Mr. Powell has found success as the artistic director of the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, an African drum and dance performance company. Furthermore, he has excelled as a dancer with Wo’se Theater, as a dancer with the African Heritage Dancers and Drummers and as a singer with his regional band and choir for his chapter of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Powell is additionally active as one of the lead drummers for a cultural activity spanning every Sunday between May 1 to October 31 at a well-regarded park in Washington D.C.

During his impressive professional ventures, Mr. Powell pursued an education at Antioch University, obtaining a degree in early childhood education in 1972. In 2017, he was celebrated for his exceptional undertakings with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington D.C. Black Community. Mr. Powell attributes his long and lauded career to the influence of the wonderful master drummers who had mentored him and refined his skills in the art of drumming.

Having always harbored a profound interest in drumming, Mr. Powell was drawn to the performing arts as he began learning more about the art of drumming within African culture. A firm believer in his performances being an extension of God’s purpose for him on this Earth, he is also proud to have worked with the National Education Association as a business analyst for more than 30 years while also thriving as a musician and dancer. Familiar with more than 30 different drumming rhythms and 25 different chants, Mr. Powell hopes to continue expanding upon the cultural relevance of his activities while bolstering the performances of his extremely talented colleagues in the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers in the years to come.
