Milton Friedly, Fine Artist and Professor of Art at Elizabethtown College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists and Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in fine arts and visual arts education.
Mr. Friedly is a full professor of art at Elizabethtown College and a multimedia fine artist currently working primarily in video and time-based installation, painting, printmaking, and digital photography. After completing an Associate of Arts at Northwest College in 1979, Mr. Friedly found himself in the studio near-constantly, and he began working full-time in the arts in 1980. He continued his studies, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University in 1983, and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Wyoming in 1985. While studying at the University of Wyoming, Mr. Friedly had his first experience teaching after accepting a graduate teaching assistantship and fell in love with the opportunity to help students develop their skills and discover their artistic voices.
He became a professor at Elizabethtown College in 1987, where he continues to teach introductory and advanced painting, sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics classes in addition to facilitating Senior Seminars and mentoring students. Throughout his career, Mr. Friedly has been a guest instructor at institutions including Messiah College, Northwest College, and the Pennsylvania School of Art and Design, and he considers being a full-time professor to be one of the highlights of his career. While he prides himself on his work teaching and mentoring emerging artists, Mr. Friedly has also gained international recognition as a curator and a creator. His work has been included in museum shows at venues including the Lesher Center for the Arts, George Krevsky Fine Art Galerie, the Demuth Museum, and the Lancaster Museum of Art, and he is a sought-after exhibition judge and curator, with recent curatorial projects including “Peacemaking: An American and European Exchange of Art and Writings” at Stuttgart’s Gallerie Kerstan and “Lawrence Ferlinghetti: An American Cultural Icon” at the Lyet Gallery at Elizabethtown College.
Mr. Friedly has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including a 2019 Senior Merit from Elizabethtown College, Third Prize in the 45th Annual Juried Show at the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery at Lebanon Valley College, and the Maya Schock Award for Sculpture from the State Museum of Pennsylvania Susquehanna Art Museum. He attributes his success to hard work, faith, and perseverance, and believes strongly in inclusivity, equality, and using his work to help create opportunities for the next generation. He looks forward to continuing to teach and create artwork for as long as he is able, adding that when you are generous with your time and energy, it has a tendency to come back to you in kind. A self-professed “family man,” Mr. Friedly enjoys spending his leisure time with his three grandchildren and six grandchildren.
