Title: Artistic Director and Founder
Company: Labyrinth Dance Theater
Location: Briarwood, New York, United States
Sasha Spielvogel, artistic director and founder of Labyrinth Dance Theater, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dance performance and choreography.
Ms. Spielvogel is the founder and artistic director of the Labyrinth Dance Theater, a company of classically-trained dancers performing original works driven by themes of social justice, psychology and the human experience. A graduate of New York University’s Gallatin School of Individual Study, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in dance and choreography and has studied with the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company and the Martha Graham Dance Company, among others. Initially, Ms. Spielvogel found success as a dancer, but soon found that she did not enjoy being directed and, by 1979, turned her focus toward creating original choreography that explored the archetypes and themes that had long fascinated her. In 1990, she established the Labyrinth Dance Theater.
Many of Ms. Spielvogel’s dance plays have been recorded or adapted into film pieces, and the Labyrinth Dance Theater has performed across the United States and internationally, with appearances in nearly a dozen countries. The company’s repertory includes works exploring narratives about the Holocaust, such as “NOOR” and “Waltz for a Shattered World,” the early years of the American AIDS epidemic, including “Taboo” and “Not Even if I Try,” and abstract spiritual and erotic themes, like “Dark Angel” and “Auditioning for the Celestial Follies.” Ms. Spielvogel is a member of Dance USA, Dance NYC and the American Dance Guild, and was honored in 2016 by Dancers Over 40 with a Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement, which recognized her career as a performer and powerhouse choreographer, to say nothing of being a legend within New York’s independent performing arts scene.
