Michael Drew Mendelson, Founder and Owner of Mendelson Communications, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a writer, novelist and editor.
In preparation for his professional pursuits, Mr. Mendelson attended Sonoma State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and English, with honors, in 1977. He continued his academic efforts at San Francisco State University, graduating with a Master of Arts in English literature with a concentration in creative writing in 1980. Additionally, Mr. Mendelson completed coursework at the Artillery Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970, an experience which has influenced his writing, including his novel “A Shepherd to Fools” about the Vietnam War, which he wrote in 2020.
Mr. Mendelson is a prolific writer, authoring “Pilgrimage” in 1980, “Marin 2120 A.D.” in 1980, “Song Ba To” in 2010, as well as “Chief to Smoke” and “The Folly of a Dream,” which are still in progress. He additionally co-authored “Dark Sea Rising” with Barry Broad in 2018, and has contributed to further publications. In recognition of his accomplishments, Mr. Mendelson has received various awards for editorial excellence, news and feature writing, and photography from both the International Labor Communications Association and the Western Labor Press Association. He was also a finalist for the Ted Sorensen Speech Writing Award in 2008.
Mr. Mendelson is the founder and owner of Mendelson Communications, where he worked for a decade from 2009 to 2019, and was previously a senior policy adviser for California state treasurers Phil Angelides, Bill Lockyer and John Chiang between 2005 and 2017. From 2004 to 2005, he was the chief writer for the California Senate Democratic Caucus, and from 1999 to 2003 he was communications director for California Governor Gray Davis. In his free time, Mr. Mendelson enjoys photography, traveling to Italy, biking, hiking and camping. Married to Susan Lee Aguilar since 1992, he is the proud father of children Alexandra, Eric, Max, and Jacob, and grandfather to grandson Kevin.
