Charles H. Pettaway Jr., professor of music at Lincoln University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of music education.
Drawing on more than three decades of expertise in music education, Mr. Pettaway has distinguished himself as a professor at Lincoln University. Specializing in piano performance education, as well as advanced music theory and musical history, he initially began as an assistant professor of music and gradually advanced to become a full professor in 2012. Outside of his primary endeavors as a professor, Mr. Pettaway also teaches private lessons to aspiring pianists via pedagogy courses.
Well regarded as a talented concert pianist in his own right, Mr. Pettaway has delivered a vast number of performances at a variety of venues and events, including at the Art Museum of Philadelphia in 2003, the Villa Walsh Academy in 2000, the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Mediator in 1999, and for the WFLN radio station in Philadelphia. He is particularly proud to have received numerous recognitions for his work, including first prize at the Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition, hosted by Radford University and the Eastern Region Black Musicians Competition. Likewise, Mr. Pettaway was bestowed with a Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities at Stanford University in 2021.
Mr. Pettaway initially started playing the piano at the age of six, having drawn inspiration from the example of his grandmother and aunt, both of whom were skilled pianists in their own right. At the age of 14, he attended the Philadelphia Music Academy on a full scholarship and learned under Clemente C. Patrillo, his mentor, who taught him the basics of technique and musicality. Mr. Pettaway graduated from the academy with a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, in 1971, after which he attained a Master of Music, cum laude, from Temple University in 1976.
