Born with cerebral palsy, he believes the impairment fuels his determination to succeed. He has written songs for two decades, devoting his time to songwriting as a career after he retired from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in 2018. Inspired to write music by his mother, who was a professional singer, he was equally influenced to work in veterans affairs by his father, who himself spent many years helping disabled American veterans. Mr. Hartnett excelled as a rating specialist for the aforementioned agency for 25 years, investigating and carrying out more than 8,000 decisions on disability ratings.
Recognized often for his vital contributions toward improving the lives of U.S. veterans, Mr. Hartnett has received the Outstanding Service/Performance Award from Disabled American Veterans, as well as Employee of the Year honors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Among his many accomplishments, he is particularly proud of having coordinated a project that helped former American prisoners of war receive benefits from the government. Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Hartnett earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with honors, in 1985.
