Arthur Fagen, music director at The Atlanta Opera, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in orchestral conducting.

With over 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Fagen has excelled as conductor and music director of The Atlanta Opera since 2010. He began his career as assistant conductor to Christoph von Dohnanyi of the Frankfurt Opera of Germany in 1972. He established himself as an assistant conductor to James Levine at the New York Metropolitan Opera and then as a guest conductor at the Vienna State Opera from 1998 to 2001. He was a member of the conducting staff of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra, and chief conductor of the Flanders Opera of Antwerp and Ghent. He served as principal conductor at Kassel and Brunswick before transitioning to the role of general music director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dortmund Opera from 2002 to 2007. 

Mr. Fagen established himself as professor of orchestral conducting of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University since 2008. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Wesleyan University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in music in 1974. He continued his academic efforts and completed coursework at the Curtis Institute of Music. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He undertook the revival of the long-neglected “Negro Folk Symphony,” a stellar composition by the black composer William Levi Dawson, which was endorsed as one of the Top CDs of 2020 by National Public Radio and WQXR-FM.

Mr. Fagen has completed multiple symphonies and concertos, and his professional works have generated acclaim in such notable publications as Gramophone Magazine, The New York Times, and Fanfare. He has received multiple awards throughout the duration of his career including his remarkable first-prize victory at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Conductors Competition in 1974 and his third-place finish at the Gino Marinuzzi International Conductors’ Competition. In the immediate future, he has clear intentions to persist in his professional pursuits of conducting and music education.
