Dr. Slobin, a distinguished professional with an extensive background in academia, has dedicated her career to teaching, research, and community involvement. She earned a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of California in 1991, a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Hayward, now California State University, in 1984, a Master in Fine Arts in fine arts-painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts, now California College of the Arts, in 1980, and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Pomona College in 1964.

Dr. Slobin’s career journey includes serving as a professor emerita at North Dakota State University, where she held various roles such as professor, chair of the department of sociology-anthropology, associate professor, director of women’s studies, and assistant professor of sociology from 1991 to 2007. Prior to her tenure at North Dakota State University, she worked as a staff research associate and research assistant at the University of California from 1986 to 1990, as an associate director at the continuing education department of psychiatry with the University of California from 1983 to 1986, an education coordinator at the National Energy Foundation in 1982, and a fine arts instructor at Indian Valley Community College from 1981 to 1982.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Slobin contributed as a virtual docent for the Asian Art Museum’s program, conducted research and consulted for the West River Regional Medical Center, served as an instructor at Cappadocia University Community College, and worked as a research associate at the Center for Study of Women in Society at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.

In the civic realm, Dr. Slobin has been an active participant in various initiatives. She is a part of the Liberation Group, contributes to the Asian Art Museum’s Racism Diversity Committee, and leads and coordinates the Family Caregivers Support Group for Parkinson’s Disease. She also serves as a board member for the Society of Asian Arts and has been involved as a storyteller and docent at the Asian Art Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. Additionally, she volunteers for the Refugee Committee. In her creative endeavors, Dr. Slobin has authored several works, including “Field Notes Through Dark Times and Other Dislocations,” and contributed to various journals and book chapters. She has also served as a speaker at the California Pacific Medical Center and edited the SWS Network News for the Society for Women Sociologists.

Dr. Slobin’s career is marked by numerous achievements and accolades, including induction into the Tapestry of Diverse Talents in 2006, the Presidents Development Award from the American Sociological Association in 2006, and the Presidents Professional Development Award from Women’s World, Kampala, Uganda in 2002, among others. She finds fulfillment in her multifaceted interests, including painting, music, wildlife photography, theater, and writing poetry and journals. Dr. Slobin’s dedication to her profession and her commitment to community engagement serve as an inspiration to many aspiring professionals.
