For over 15 years, Ms. Avelar has been building a reputation for excellence in graphic design and fine arts. Since 2022, she has been working for herself as the owner, graphic designer and mixed-media artist at Marisa Avelar Artwork and Design. Additionally, Ms. Avelar hosts her own Etsy shop and continues to serve on the New York City Campaign Finance Board, an independent agency of New York, as a senior graphic designer since 2022.

Ms. Avelar made her mark as an exhibition designer at the Smithsonian Institution from 2017 to 2022. She also worked as a senior graphic designer for The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston between 2010 and 2016. Among other noteworthy roles, Ms. Avelar was a designer for Live Nation Worldwide Inc. from 2009 to 2010, an art director for Adplex between 2007 and 2008, and a production artist and designer at Stanford Financial Group between 2006 and 2007.

As an artist, Ms. Avelar has been included in a multitude of exhibitions, including “A Little Bit of This and That” at My Flaming Heart in Houston and “Drawing from Nature: Landscapes by Liebermann, Corinth, Slevog” at the Museum of Fine Arts. She has also served as an expert in invitation design, web and social media design, logos and print.

Becoming highly educated in her field, Ms. Avelar received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting and graphic design from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro in 2005 with the assistance of a Betty Foy Sanders Scholarship. Following her college studies, she garnered additional expertise through an internship at Lockwood Costa Design in 2006. Ms. Avelar’s education has been critical to her success and ability to work independently as a business owner.

Ms. Avelar enjoys membership with the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), which she has been affiliated with since 2007. In addition to her primary career objectives, she enjoys giving back to organizations by volunteering her time and providing her expertise with AIGA and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Throughout her remarkable career, Ms. Avelar has achieved numerous honors, including the opportunity to design a banner celebrating the Day of the Dead for the American Indian Museum in Lower Manhattan, which notably celebrates her culture. A huge honor for her, Ms. Avelar was eager to participate in the project. Each year, the banner is erected, and she is tasked with the exhibition graphics on the exterior of the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House.

Ms. Avelar attributes her success to hard work, good mentors, and persistence. She also notes many talented designers, particularly females, that she has admired and who have influenced her work. Eager for what the future holds, Ms. Avelar looks forward to future success and continually being recognized for her work, which speaks for itself. She also intends to keep growing in her field and never become complacent as an artist. Moreover, Ms. Avelar plans to focus on participating in gallery shows and other opportunities to showcase her work.
