Notably, his first nomination, a Latin Grammy, was received in 2008 during his first year of college with the Babysittinabria Latin Big Band. Among other honors, Mr. Sands received the Chevalier Award from the French government, an esteemed honor acknowledging his role as a musician and ambassador of music. He also received Man of the Year honors from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 2011, won a Recognition Award from The Links Incorporated Organization in 2024, and was honored with the Duke Ellington Fellow Award from Yale University in 2025.
