Mr. Edwards has distinguished himself as an internationally known watercolor and acrylic artist, workshop instructor, published author, teacher and juror for more than two decades. His expertise and reputation have led him to instruct workshops around the world and serve as a juried judge for national and international competitions, having recently judged the Hawaii Watercolor Society annual competition and the Tennessee Watercolor Society annual exhibition in 2026. Additionally, Mr. Edwards’s role as an instructor at the Artefacto School of Art in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Paris, France, has further established his influence in global art education. Notably, he was selected by the school as both a watercolor abstract and an acrylic abstract art instructor in 2022 and as an acrylic impressionist art instructor in 2023.

In 2006, Mr. Edwards co-founded Art Academy Live, contributing to online art education and expanding access to creative instruction. His entrepreneurial spirit began with the ownership of Sterling Edwards Artist LLC in Hendersonville, North Carolina, in 2000. Through his dedicated website, viewers can see his recent works, including his mixed media and acrylic paintings, purchase his artwork and art supplies, join live Zoom classes, and read past newsletters he has written.

Before establishing himself in the arts community, Mr. Edwards dedicated two decades to law enforcement and firefighting. This early career provided a foundation of discipline and public service that would later inform his approach as an educator and mentor within the arts.

Throughout his career in the fine arts, Mr. Edwards has developed signature products, such as the Sterling Edwards Big Brush Watercolor Palette in 2005 and the Sterling Edwards Signature Brush Collection in 2009. His expertise has also become frequently sought after as a juried judge for national and international competitions since 2005.

Mr. Edwards’ work has achieved international recognition through several major milestones. He has been featured on covers and within articles of leading art publications such as The New Palette magazine’s “From Here to Where?” in 2017, “Abstract Art You Can Hang Your Hat On” in 2018 and “Stylize It” in 2022. He was also included in The Art of Watercolor magazine’s “The Path to Abstraction” in 2023. Mr. Edwards’s artwork has also been selected for private wine labels at Daveste Vineyards in Troutman, North Carolina, across multiple years. In addition to these honors, he accepted an invitation from the Watercolor Society of Romania in 2025 to exhibit on the “Wall of International Watercolor Masters” at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.

Throughout his career, Mr. Edwards’s award-winning watercolor paintings have been included in dozens of private and corporate collections worldwide, dating back to 1993. Notably, in 2025, one of his paintings became part of King Charles III’s private collection in the library at Windsor Castle.

A prolific author and contributor to creative literature, Mr. Edwards authored the bestselling North Light book “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes: A Four-Step Process,” published by F+W Publishing Company in 2010. He also wrote the foreword for “Seascape Watercolors with the One Wash Technique” in 2022 and has been a featured artist in numerous other books and international publications.

Mr. Edwards holds membership in several prestigious organizations that reflect his standing within the artistic community. He has been a charter member of both the Rusty Nail Painters, based in Toronto, since 2008, and the North American Watercolor Society since 2025. He also maintains signature memberships with the National Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and the Whiskey Painters of America. Additionally, Mr. Edwards is affiliated with the American Watercolor Society, the International Watercolor Society based in Teos, Turkey, the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the High Country Watermedia Society. Beyond his professional pursuits, he contributes to civic life as a supporter of artistic scholarships aimed at fostering new talent within visual arts communities.

Among Mr. Edwards’s most notable honors are the High Winds Medal Award from the American Watercolor Society’s 159th Annual International Exhibition in New York in 2026, following the Royal Collection Trust Recipient distinction from the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour for inclusion in the Royal Collection Trust of His Majesty King Charles III in 2025. Earlier, he received the Past President’s Award at the National Watercolor Society’s 97th Annual Open International Exhibition in San Pedro, California, in 2017 and the Jan Gary & William D. Gorman Memorial Award from the American Watercolor Society’s 150th International Exhibition in New York that same year. Among other accolades, Mr. Edwards was the recipient of the Maurice Prendergast Award from the Transparent Watercolor Society of America’s international juried competition in 2010.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Edwards balances his artistic endeavors with personal interests like photography. His journey from public service to international recognition as an artist underscores a lifelong commitment to creativity, education and community engagement within fine arts circles worldwide.
