The ensemble features a full brass section and adapts its size for various venues. As part of his responsibilities, Mr. Gutierrez manages rehearsals, directs professional musicians, including those with advanced academic credentials, and collaborates closely with music educators from Temple College to recruit emerging talent. His daily routine involves reviewing and digitizing decades’ worth of lyrics and song ideas, experimenting with artificial intelligence tools to explore new arrangements and genres, and expanding his repertoire across Latin styles, such as cumbia, merengue and bachata, as well as English-language country music.
Since 2017, Mr. Gutierrez has performed under the stage name Jovi Jiovanni. He is recognized for his bilingual abilities and for embracing a wide range of musical styles, qualities that set him apart from many Latin performers who often focus on a single genre. Mr. Gutierrez’s openness to experimentation has enabled him to write and record songs in both Spanish and English, carving out a unique niche within the music industry.
Mr. Gutierrez’s songwriting career formally began in 2001 with Musa En Clave. Over the years, he has developed a reputation for crafting lyrics that emphasize positive messages and structural metaphors suitable for all audiences. His commitment to originality is evident in his careful selection of cover material. Notably, Mr. Gutierrez avoids widely performed songs in favor of lesser-known works by established artists to ensure each performance remains fresh and distinctive.
Before devoting himself fully to music, Mr. Gutierrez completed an exemplary 15-year tenure with the federal government following his retirement from the military. From 2018 to 2023, he served as logistics supervisor at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Dallas, Texas. In this capacity, he was recognized as a subject matter expert in military hospital logistics, a field where he had already established himself during his previous role at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood between 2007 and 2018. There, Mr. Gutierrez managed complex logistics operations and contributed significantly to major projects, such as hospital construction and process redesign.
From 2007 to 2013, Mr. Gutierrez held the position of supervisor general supply specialist at the Warrior Transition Brigade at Fort Hood. He was instrumental in establishing the logistics section of this newly created unit supporting wounded soldiers, a testament to his reputation for restoring order and implementing effective systems. Mr. Gutierrez’s earlier work included a decade-long tenure as a logistics supervisor and general supply specialist at Darnall Army Community Hospital.
Mr. Gutierrez’s foundational expertise stems from his distinguished career as a logistics specialist and vehicle repairer in the U.S. Armed Forces, which spanned over two decades. Rising through the ranks despite initial language barriers after arriving from Puerto Rico, he quickly distinguished himself through advanced mathematics skills and innovative approaches to logistical challenges. During this time, Mr. Gutierrez became recognized for developing visual presentation methods that streamlined resource reporting, an achievement that earned him gratitude from commanding officers early in his service.
Before his military career, Mr. Gutierrez worked for several years as an automotive mechanic and bodywork technician at his brother’s garage in Puerto Rico. This experience not only provided technical skills but also fostered community relationships that would later inform his collaborative approach in both military and musical settings.
Mr. Gutierrez’s educational background included earning an associate’s degree in Puerto Rico and a second associate’s degree in general studies from Central Texas College. He further enhanced his professional qualifications by completing the supply chain management executive education certificate program at The University of Texas at Austin, which has supported his success in both military logistics and civilian government roles.
Active in various organizations, Mr. Gutierrez is a member of the Texas Songwriters Club and serves on the Killeen Music Friendly Committee under the Texas Music Friendly Program. In these roles, he promotes music-friendly initiatives within the community by managing informational booths at events and compiling directories of local activities.
Mr. Gutierrez’s creative output has been recognized with two professional songwriting awards as well as a joint award shared with his daughter for their vocal and songwriting collaboration, a performance that resonated deeply with audiences during a competition held in Miami, Florida. He also received a Salsa Songwriting Award after winning Best Salsa Singer at another prestigious event.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gutierrez has demonstrated exceptional ability in compartmentalizing his dual passions for music and military service, a discipline rooted in years of balancing public responsibilities with private artistic pursuits. For much of his federal service, few colleagues were aware of his musical achievements until local media coverage brought them into public view following award-winning performances.
A lifelong learner who began singing professionally at age 4 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Mr. Gutierrez credits early experiences, including performing serenades with local musicians, with shaping his enduring love for music’s power to connect people emotionally. At age 13, joining his brother’s salsa group further solidified this path when he witnessed firsthand how music could influence lives.
Looking ahead, Mr. Gutierrez’s primary goals center on achieving broader recognition for his compositions while upholding positive values through uplifting lyrics free from derogatory content. He seeks opportunities to collaborate with recording artists who can bring new life to his original works and aspires ultimately to produce a compilation album featuring multiple vocalists interpreting his songs.
