Vernon J. Gregory Jr., Author of “My Vietnam: Chicago to Southeast Asia”, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in writing.
A military veteran with six years of service to his credit, Mr. Gregory notably authored “My Vietnam: Chicago to Southeast Asia” in 2021. An accumulation of his experiences during and following the Vietnam War in 1971, the book encapsulates the trauma that he has lived with after his mission in Vietnam, his tenure in the U.S. Army between 1970 and 1976 and the struggles of military veterans following their combat experiences. Having written this nonfiction book over the course of nearly 30 years, Mr. Gregory was dedicated to sharing his story and helping others understand how post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has afflicted veterans, especially members of their families.
Prior to his military service, Mr. Gregory earned an associate’s degree in electrical engineering at Thornton Community College in 1970. After his discharge from active service in 1972, he began his civilian career with a trucking company between 1972 and 1984, during which time he worked as a truck driver, truck tire repairman, excavator, and painter for heavy equipment, trucks and trailers. Eventually, Mr. Gregory encountered a fellow workaholic who was in the military reserves and decided they would go into business for themselves.
Between 1985 and 2005, Mr. Gregory was the owner of Illinois Adhesive Bonding Inc., having initially operated in residential structural repair before advancing into the commercial and industrial space by their second year of business. He would contribute his extraordinary talents to repairs at such major sites as the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Marseilles Lock and Dam over the course of his career, and he was able to buy out his partner in less than a decade of operation. As a result of his exceptional professional efforts, Mr. Gregory was recognized as the foremost authority in the repair of cracks in concrete in the Midwest, became the sole provider for various contractors and institutions, and was heralded for being number one in sales in his regional industry for 10 consecutive years.
Among the many highlights of his career, Mr. Gregory is proud to have saved many buildings and structures for collapse or failure, which are all still standing to this day. He also fondly recalls installing 80-feet gates at the Marseilles Lock and Dam, fixing cracks that had developed on the concrete which prevented months worth of repairs and unwanted traffic on the Indiana River. Outside of his primary responsibilities, he has been recognized as a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VVA. Looking toward the future, Mr. Gregory hopes to visit the people with whom he served in Vietnam and complete his second book, which focuses on the secrets of the U.S. government.
