Mr. Malkin’s professional journey spans more than four decades, marked by innovation in music, healing arts and public speaking. Recognized as a multiple Emmy Award-winning composer and innovator in musically enhanced wisdom, he founded Gary Malkin Enterprises in Western Massachusetts in 1979 as a composer for mainstream media and a thought leader, and has also served as a music producer and arranger for singers and wisdom keepers since 1980. In 2010, Mr. Malkin expanded his expertise by incorporating his roles as a public speaker, health and arts innovator, and consultant for greater humanity. In this capacity, he has delivered keynote addresses and workshops that integrate music with healing practices, reaching diverse audiences worldwide. His influence as a thought leader was further recognized when he delivered his first-ever TED Talk in 2026.
In 2020, Mr. Malkin branched out with the formation of You, Awake: Mastering the Art of Flow in Greenfield, Massachusetts, as a co-founder. This educational platform is dedicated to fostering personal transformation through creative expression and mindfulness. Additionally, in 2024, Mr. Malkin founded Portals of Awe in Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts, where he continues to explore the intersection of music, consciousness and human connection through infused wisdom, contemplative practices and shared presence.
Among other career accomplishments, Mr. Malkin served as the director of music and sound strategies for elder communities at The Goodman Group LLC in 2015, a long-term care facility. There, he was privileged to work alongside the late John Goodman, developing programs to enhance seniors’ quality of life through therapeutic soundscapes and musical engagement.
From 2010 to 2019, Mr. Malkin served as a keynote speaker, performer and humanity consultant through his company, Gary Malkin Productions. During this period, he became widely known for his ability to use music to encourage emotional healing and social connection. He also introduced the critical growing arts and health movement in society.
Early in his career, Mr. Malkin established Music Design, later renamed Gary Ramal Music Design, which became San Francisco’s largest music production company. He subsequently led Wisdom of the World for two decades before founding Gary Malkin Enterprises.
Mr. Malkin earned a diploma from South Side High School in 1971 and studied music composition at the University of Southern California in 1972. Mr. Malkin also completed college coursework in music composition and ethnomusicology at Oberlin College and Conservatory in 1973.
Throughout his career, Mr. Malkin has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Evolutionary Leaders Circle, the Institute of Noetic Sciences and the Global Philanthropy Forum. Beyond his professional pursuits, he has demonstrated civic commitment through ongoing involvement with Creating Music for Media at Pachamama Alliance in San Francisco since 2001. He also founded the Global Wisdom Foundation in Turners Falls from 2024 to 2025, which was dedicated to restoring humanity’s connection to timeless wisdom.
Mr. Malkin’s creative output included several acclaimed works, including “Music of the Great Smoky,” issued by Real Music in 2000, “Graceful Passages: A Companion for Living and Dying,” a listening resource with Michal and Doris Stillwater, released by New World Library in 2006, and “Safe in the Arms of Love: Deepening the Essential Bond with Your Baby,” published by Wise Parenting Press in 2011. A defining moment in his career came through his work “Graceful Passages,” which exemplified his commitment to using music as a bridge for reconciliation and healing. One notable account involved a family estranged by conflict who were reunited at their mother’s bedside after listening to a track from “Graceful Passages.” The recording facilitated an emotional breakthrough that brought the family together at their most critical moment, a testament to the transformative power of Mr. Malkin’s artistry.
Among his numerous other works, Mr. Malkin created the acclaimed Gaia streaming television series “Islands of Inner Peace” and co-created the lauded caregiver audio series “Care for the Journey.” Earlier, he served as the composer for the 1998 film “BASEketball” and the 1999 film “Mumford,” and co-created the theme for the legendary music from the classic television drama series “Unsolved Mysteries,” which began airing in 1987. More recently, Mr. Malkin completed a stage musical, “Can You Hear Me? A Story About Sex, Love and OMG Birth” with Lisa Rafel and Dr. Davis Surrenda.
As a leader in his industry, Mr. Malkin has presented before institutions and conferences hosted by organizations such as Stanford Health, Google and the Arizona Center for Integrative Health. He is also frequently invited to speak at health care conferences and new thought spiritual communities worldwide. Moreover, Mr. Malkin has been featured on PBS and in the radio series “Healing Quest,” and has been interviewed on national talk shows and in other media, promoting a deeper understanding of music’s role in optimal health and contentment.
Having developed a passion for music early on, Mr. Malkin began playing piano at age 5 without formal instruction, guided by an innate sense of harmony and melody. A pivotal childhood experience occurred when he watched “The Miracle Worker” at age 11, deepening his understanding of music’s emotional impact. Inspired by Leonard Bernstein and driven by a desire to connect with others on a profound level, Mr. Malkin pursued film scoring, the art of creating original music that enhances a movie’s story, emotion and atmosphere, evoking empathy and hope. Notably, at age 28, while scoring “Airlift” at Alice Kelly Hall, he witnessed firsthand how music could inspire resilience amid adversity.
Throughout Mr. Malkin’s career as a music producer and arranger, he has collaborated with renowned artists and spiritual leaders to create works that inspire reflection and unity. He has also made more than 1,000 commercials, 100 documentaries, over 20 feature films and numerous albums during his tenure in the industry. During his career, a serious bicycle accident that shattered his wrist prompted him to reflect deeply on his life’s purpose. This period inspired new works that integrate spoken messages from global leaders.
Mr. Malkin’s contributions have been recognized with many accolades, including Best Soundtrack Award at the Media Awards, as well as multiple Emmy, Clio, Peabody and ASCAP Awards. He credits his parents with shaping much of his background and values. Eager for future endeavors, Mr. Malkin is working toward completing his forthcoming book, tentatively titled “Resonance Revolution.”
