Philip Lawrence Sherrod, Artist, Composer, Painter, Poet, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Fine Arts.
Mr. Sherrod founded Street Painters in New York in 1977, and has taught in the city and in New Jersey since 1973. A man of many talents, he nevertheless attributes his success to his humility, even though he recently won a 2017 International Prize Galileo Galilei from Salvatore Russo. It is the latest in numerous prizes for Mr. Sherrod’s work, which has been displayed in a group exhibition in the National Academy Museum in New York since 2001. Among numerous exhibitions, Mr. Sherrod has notably been exhibited at Fordham University, the Gallerie des Hamptons, the New England Fine Arts Institute, and the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. His work is in the permanent collections of some singularly celebrated names, including Bill Paxton, Richard Brown Baker, Allan Stone, and Steven Paine.
A recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Mr. Sherrod has appeared in numerous volumes of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World, as well as the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the East. He attended Oklahoma State University to earn a BS in 1957 and a BA in 1959, followed by postgraduate coursework in the ‘60s with the Art Students League, Jacques Seligman College, and the Carroll Reese Museum. He entered teaching with the Morristown Art Association in New Jersey in 1973. Early in his career, he won a First Award in Graphics, Ceramics, and Etching from Oklahoma State University.
Mr. Sherrod was honored with a 1967 Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and won it again in 1969 and 1974, followed by the Childe Hassam Purchase Awards in 1969 and 1974. In 1985, he won a Prixe de Roma Fellowship to go to the American Academy in Rome, and is a fellow of the academy today. Since then he has received numerous grants and prizes in support of his artwork, as well as membership in societies like the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors. Mr. Sherrod was presented the 2016 Canaletto Prize Artistic Career Award for his numerous exhibitions as well as his prolific career as a poet.
