Dr. Dorsey has become recognized for a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, marked by significant contributions to education policy, public service and education. Since retiring, he has dedicated his free time to becoming a writer and published author with Maurice W. Dorsey Books, where his literary work has inspired others to pursue writing and share their stories.

Since 2013, Dr. Dorsey has authored five books, all notable for their depth and personal resonance. His first book, released in 2014, is titled “Businessman First,” followed by “From Whence We Come” in 2017 and “Of Time and Spirit: A Tribute to My Father” in 2020. “Zelma’s Aphorisms, Old School Wisdom, Instructive, Inspirational, Hilarious, to Outrageous,” released in 2022, captures generational wisdom passed down through his family. Dr. Dorsey’s most recent book, “So Many Angels,” was published in 2023 and dedicated to those who supported him throughout his life.

Before pivoting into this creative journey, Dr. Dorsey spent over 40 years at the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the national program leader for public policy, retiring in 2012. In this capacity, he became recognized as an expert in education policy, influencing national initiatives and supporting public engagement on critical issues.

Earlier in his professional life, Dr. Dorsey contributed to Baltimore City Public Schools in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1973. He subsequently taught college students at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland, and Morgan State University in Baltimore. These roles enabled Dr. Dorsey to directly impact students while developing a deep understanding of educational systems.

Dr. Dorsey’s academic achievements have provided a strong foundation for his professional success. After receiving a diploma from Bel Air High School in 1965, he earned a Bachelor of Science in family and consumer sciences from the University of Maryland in 1970, a Master of Arts in humanities from Johns Hopkins University in 1975, a Master of Arts in education from Loyola University of Maryland in 1976, and a Doctor of Philosophy in education from the University of Maryland in 1983.

Civic engagement remains central to Dr. Dorsey’s legacy. Most notably, he founded the Maurice W. Dorsey and Robert James Batches Endowed Scholarship through the University System of Maryland Foundation in 2022 as a tribute to a significant personal relationship and loss. His philanthropic efforts extended further with the establishment of a second scholarship at Southern New Hampshire University, honoring his thesis mentor, David Maloney. Dr. Dorsey also serves on the alum board for student engagement at his alma mater and joined the University of Maryland Women’s Society as a tribute to his mother through the National Council of Negro Women. Other memberships include the University of Maryland Alumni Association and the NAACP, and life membership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Phi Delta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dorsey has been honored with several accolades that underscore his influence and leadership. In 2024, he received the Alumni Excellence Legacy Award from the University of Maryland. Dr. Dorsey credits his parents for instilling resilience, self-reliance and discipline. These qualities enabled him to overcome adversity related to racial discrimination and personal identity challenges throughout his life.

Looking ahead, Dr. Dorsey aims to complete his master’s degree at Southern New Hampshire University, which he is currently pursuing. He also intends to continue growing scholarship funds to give back while building on his legacy by establishing new scholarships or memorials honoring individuals featured in “So Many Angels.” Moreover, Dr. Dorsey has plans to contribute additional books and submit essays for publication.
