Ms. Bushman has distinguished herself as a consummate violinist and musician, with a career spanning over 45 years and marked by her expertise in orchestral, chamber, ballet and solo performance. Since 1978, she has been an integral member of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s under The Carnegie Hall Corporation. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster and section player, demonstrating versatility across a wide range of repertoire. Ms. Bushman’s commitment to musical excellence is further evidenced by her extensive performance history with esteemed ensembles throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. Notably, she played as a permanent substitute with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for nearly 20 years, connecting with international audiences and contributing to the group’s global acclaim.
In 1982, Ms. Bushman began her tenure with the American Ballet Theater, Ballet Theater Foundation, Inc., where she continues to perform in ballet productions that demand both technical mastery and interpretive sensitivity. Additionally, in 1992, she began serving as the assistant concertmaster with the Westchester Philharmonic, where her leadership and artistry have contributed to the ensemble’s reputation for excellence.
Ms. Bushman’s career has also included performances with the New York City Opera and The Santa Fe Opera, where she brought her expertise to operatic productions of significant artistic merit. As a performer with the Portsmouth Chamber Ensemble, now Portsmouth Guildhall, she achieved recognition by winning the Artists International Competition, which led to a concert at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, Ms. Bushman has performed with Spring Fever, a jazz group founded by Marin Alsop, and has performed as a soloist with several other major orchestras, including the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Long Island Philharmonic. Her advocacy for contemporary music is reflected in her work with The Crescent Quartet, presenting works by female composers at prominent events, such as the International Congress on Women in Music in France, Germany and Mexico, and at the United Nations for International Women’s Day.
In addition to her performance career, Ms. Bushman is deeply committed to education and mentorship. She teaches violin privately. Notably, she mentored a high school student online during the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraging him to pursue studies at her alma mater, Oberlin College and Conservatory, in Oberlin, Ohio.
Ms. Bushman’s academic foundation included earning a bachelor’s degree in music at Oberlin College and Conservatory in 1973. She continued her studies at The Juilliard School in New York City, receiving a master’s degree in music in 1975. At Juilliard, Ms. Bushman studied under Oscar Shumsky, a primary influence on her artistic development.
Active in her professional circle, Ms. Bushman is a member of Chamber Music America and the American Composers Orchestra. These affiliations allow her to remain abreast in the field.
Throughout her career, Ms. Bushman has been recognized for both artistic achievement and academic excellence. She received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1992 and was a three-time concerto winner at the National Music Camp, now Interlochen Arts Camp, through Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan. Additionally, Ms. Bushman was awarded a scholarship from the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda.
Reflecting on her career, Ms. Bushman credits her parents for inspiring her musical path. Her father was a faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and her mother was a gifted pianist. Ms. Bushman attributes her enduring success to an openness to continual learning and adaptability within diverse musical settings, qualities that have enabled her to thrive across opera, ballet, contemporary music, baroque repertoire and jazz ensembles. She emphasizes adopting new techniques and remaining flexible as essential strategies for longevity in an evolving field.
Looking ahead, Ms. Bushman remains dedicated to performing solo recitals and collaborating with orchestras and chamber groups. She also intends to maintain an active role as an educator and mentor within the musical community.
