Robert L. Giron, Professor Emeritus and Publisher at Gival Press, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in publishing.
After graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics in 1973, Mr. Giron attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale to secure a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language in 1975. He received a certificate in literature from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom in 1998 and in 1999. From 1986 to 2018, he was a professor at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland. He served as the department chair of the English Department from 1992 to 1995 and again from 2010 to 2013; he also served as an acting-dean.
In 1984, Mr. Giron was the associate editor for the newsletter of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. He is the owner, publisher and editor of Gival Press, LLC, a position he has held since 1998. Gival Press titles have won multiple national and international literary awards. He is a writer of note and an award-winning author of many titles, including “Poetic Voices Without Borders” and “the Best of Gival Press Short Stories.” He has also been listed in previous Who’s Who titles.
Mr. Giron founded several publications, including the Arlington Literary Journal and the Sligo Journal at Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, serving as the editor-in-chief for both. He also founded and edited Chrysalis, a literary journal for El Paso Community College. He has presented at several national conferences on the subject of teaching English. His areas of expertise include English, creative writing, English as a second language, literary fiction, poetry and editing and publishing.
Mr. Giron supports the literary arts as a member of the Academy of American Poets, the Association of Writers & Writing Programs and the Authors Guild. He served on the Commission for the Arts – Arlington County. He has given poetry readings at national and international events and has hosted several workshops on creative writing for students in middle school, high school and college. An accomplished photographer, he previously showcased his work in 1981 at the Four Centuries of History City Fair in El Paso.
Mr. Giron attributes his success to tenacity. Walt Whitman was a source of inspiration to him, motivating him to study and write poetry when he first read Whitman’s famous words. In the future, he will continue to write and publish fiction and poetry.
