Alexander (Finn) Gilbert, MFA, adjunct professor of photo imaging at Towson University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in photography.
With over a decade of experience to his credit, Mr. Gilbert has built a successful career in education and photography. Since 2024, he has excelled as an adjunct professor at Towson University and has served as the owner of Finn Gilbert Photography since 2022. His responsibilities include managing photography sessions, preparing equipment and lighting, meeting with subjects or models to capture images aligned with their preferences, and instructing a class on creative workflow. He also guides his students in camera operations and helps them master the language of photography, preparing them to become skilled photo creators. His experience also includes serving as graduate program assistant at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 2022 to 2024, temp advising assistant at the College of Southern Maryland from 2018 to 2019, and student assistant at the College of Southern Maryland from 2016 to 2018. Earlier in his career, he worked as an audiobook narrator for AEGilbert Studio from 2012 to 2015 and as a voice-over artist for the National Institutes of Health in 2012.
Laying a strong educational foundation, Mr. Gilbert earned an associate’s degree in art studies from the College of Southern Maryland in 2018, a Bachelor of Science in photographic imaging from Towson University in 2021, and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2024. He also holds a certificate in graphic design from the College of Southern Maryland. Additionally, he dedicates his time to the National Society of Leadership and Success and is actively involved in his local church.
Reflecting on his path, he initially took a gap year after high school, unsure of his career path. He considered graphic design but shifted to photography upon the encouragement of a professor who recognized his talent. Although he had not envisioned a career in education, a pivotal moment occurred when the same professor asked him to oversee a class. This sparked a passion for teaching, leading him to pursue education alongside growing his photography expertise. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was honored with Club of the Year and Student Employer of the Year at the College of Southern Maryland in 2018, which he considers the highlights of his career. He attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family, mentors, and colleagues.
Looking ahead, Mr. Gilbert plans to write a book addressing critical health care policy changes, inspired by a friend’s struggle to afford HIV medication despite insurance assurances. This experience reignited his advocacy for accessible health care, a cause he supported as a proponent of Health Care for All. In the coming years, he envisions actively advocating for health care reform, participating in impactful legislation, and transitioning into a tenured professor role. Over the next decade, he aims to complete his health care book and continue driving meaningful change. Guided by his mentors and his personal growth, he recognizes the importance of self-belief and perseverance and hopes to inspire others to do the same. In advising aspiring professionals, he notes that if you fail, you should take a moment to pause, breathe, refocus on the immediate goal, and tackle tasks incrementally.
