Susan Brandt Graham, MD, PhD, owner of Susan Brandt Graham Photography, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in obstetrics, gynecology and photography.
Dr. Graham’s professional journey reflects a dynamic, interdisciplinary career marked by significant achievements in medicine, anthropology and, more recently, in the arts. Shortly before retiring from her medical practice in 2011, she became the owner of Susan Brandt Graham Photography, where she has flourished as an award-winning photographic artist. Dr. Graham’s photography work focuses on capturing flowers, women, and the relationships between women and men. Her interest in color perception has been deeply personal, inspired by color blindness experienced by her father and son, who are unable to see the color red. Through her photography, she has experimented with removing red hues from images to better understand and predict how those with color blindness perceive the world.
Currently specializing in conceptual portraiture, Dr. Graham’s work includes a series titled “Persephone’s Choice: Every Woman’s Dilemma,” as well as photography that captures both nature and science, as seen in her “Seeing Color Colorblind” series. Her extensive portfolio of artwork has been on display in numerous art shows, solo and group exhibitions, and juried shows.
From 1994 to 2011, Dr. Graham was the owner of Susan Brandt Graham, MD, PhD, PC, where she provided specialized obstetric and gynecologic care. Before managing her own practice, she worked as a gynecologist and obstetrician at Women’s Medical Specialists Professional Corporation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 1989 to 1993. During this period, she made significant contributions toward advancing women’s health care in New Mexico.
Dr. Graham’s academic career included serving as an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1976 to 1981. In this capacity, she taught courses and conducted research that bridged the fields of medical science and cultural studies.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Graham worked as a ranger and naturalist for the U.S. National Park Service at Grand Canyon National Park. She began her professional path as a laboratory assistant in anthropology at Stovall Museum of Science and History at The University of Oklahoma in 1965.
Dr. Graham’s educational background is extensive and multidisciplinary. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from The University of Oklahoma in 1967. She then attended The University of Arizona, where she acquired a Master of Arts in 1970 and a PhD in social anthropology with a minor in archaeology in 1975. From there, Dr. Graham completed a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Kansas Medical Center in 1985, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at The University of New Mexico in 1989.
Beyond her formal education, Dr. Graham’s credentials include medical licensure in New Mexico and board certification through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, she obtained professional certificates in digital photography and an office skills certificate in web design and digital arts from The University of New Mexico.
Throughout her career, Dr. Graham has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations. She has served on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination Test Writing Committee and has been a member of the gynecology peer review committee at St. Joseph Medical Center in Albuquerque. Dr. Graham’s affiliations include membership in the New Mexico Medical Society, the Society for Medical Anthropology, and Mensa International, as well as fellowship and life membership in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has also served on the medical-legal panel of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association and was active on The American Anthropological Association’s committee on Indian affairs.
As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Graham’s scholarly contributions included numerous published papers in peer-reviewed journals spanning both anthropology and medicine. As an author and photographer, she produced several works for Southwest Digital Arts and wrote “How To Mount and Mat an 8×10 Photo for a Rose Show: Cost-Effectively and Efficiently.”
